SO YOU’RE INTERESTED IN
BECOMING A
DRIVING INSTRUCTOR?

Here are a few facts...

  • You will need to have held a full licence for at least 3 ½ years before training begins
  • No more than 6 points on your licence
  • Not have a criminal record
  • You DO NOT have to pay anything up front

To obtain entry on to the register of approved driving instructors you will need to pass 3 qualifying examinations, each one structured to a specific area of knowledge.

Part one: The Theory and Hazard Perception Test

Theory

This has to be taken at a Driving Standards Agency test centre, and consists of 100 multiple choice questions. The subjects are arranged into four bands, these are:

1) Road Procedure
2) Traffic Signs and Signals, Car Control, Pedestrians, Mechanical Knowledge
3) Driving Test, Disabilities, Law
4) Publications, Instructional Techniques

The Hazard Perception Test

  • This will follow on after the 100 multiple choice questions.
  • It's a computer based test which comprises of a selection of 14 video clips, each lasting 1 minute, showing real road scenes and developing hazards.
  • You are assessed on how soon you spot the developing hazard.

Part two: Driving Test

A driving and eyesight test conducted by a Driving Standards Agency Supervising Examiner. The test can be conducted at a test centre local to your home and is approximately one hour long. You are expected to drive in a business like, disciplined manner along a varied route showing your ability to manoeuvre and control the car safely. This is not a learner test, but a vocational test. Your driving standard must be at a very high level, and our training will bring your skill to the advanced driving level required. (conditions apply)

Part three: The Practical Test of your Ability to Teach.

The test is designed to assess the quality of the instruction you give and your ability to communicate at an appropriate level with your pupils. The test will last approximately one hour and will be split into two parts where the examiner will role play two separate pupils. You will teach the examiner whilst in the car. You will be asked to demonstrate your knowledge and ability by giving practical tuition to the examiner. Once again, our structured learning will guide you through this part of your training.

How Long Will It Take?

The time it takes to complete the course depends mainly on your own personal development ability; you can go at your own pace.
It is possible to qualify in three months (subject to test availability); however, most people take six months at least.
From passing your part one exam you will have two years to complete the other two parts for qualification.

"Mark is a great driving instructor, I felt totally confident and at ease. He’s patient and always made me feel I was capable of achieving my best, even when I didn’t think I could. I’ve already recommended him to friends, and will continue to do so. Thank you so much Mark for everything, I couldn’t have done it without you!"

- Holly Chandler

"I always believed I wouldn't be able to drive, it wasn't until I was 20 that I started. Mark taught me from the beginning to end and I enjoyed my lessons thoroughly. Mark did a fantastic job of teaching me what I thought I would never be able to learn, he also built up my confidence by never losing his patience and he did marvellously, because I passed my test first time. Job well done!!"

- Phillip Spencer

"Mark is a brilliant instructor and with a great sense of humour and unwavering patience, always made lessons enjoyable yet progressive. If he can teach someone to overcome their fear of emergency stops, oncoming traffic and cyclists, let alone pass their test first time, he must be doing something right!"

- Hayley Colraine
